Working Mechanism
It has been well established that S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is the principal methyl donor in methyltransferase reactions and that SAMe supplementation restores hepatic glutathione (GSH) deposits and attenuates liver injury. Silymarin acts as a free radical scavenger, along with modulating the enzymes responsible for the development of cellular damage, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Clinically, it reduces liver dysfunction, may reduce liver-related mortality in patients with cirrhosis and improves glycemic control in patients with concomitant diabetes, with few if any adverse events. By reducing oxidative stress and consequent cytotoxicity, silymarin also protects intact liver cells or cells which are not yet irreversibly damaged and thus may be considered to be hepatoprotective.
